Severe weather can strike with little warning, leaving behind significant property damage and emotional stress. First Western Insurance is committed to helping our policyholders navigate the aftermath of storms, tornadoes, and other natural disasters. If your home has been damaged, here’s a step-by-step guide to ensure your safety, protect your property, and begin the insurance claims process smoothly.
Step 1: Ensure Your Safety First
Your safety and the safety of your loved ones should always come first. Before assessing the damage:
- Check for injuries and call emergency services if needed.
- Evacuate your home if it’s unsafe or structurally compromised.
- Avoid downed power lines, exposed wires, and standing water that may be electrically charged.
- Do not re-enter your damaged home until authorities or emergency personnel deem it safe.
Step 2: Prevent Further Damage
Once it's safe to do so, take reasonable steps to prevent further damage:
- Cover broken windows with plywood or plastic sheeting.
- Tarp over damaged roofs to prevent water intrusion.
- Shut off utilities (gas, water, electricity) if there's a risk of fire or flooding.
- Keep receipts for any emergency repairs, these may be reimbursed under your policy.
Tip: Do not attempt major repairs yourself. Leave structural and electrical work to licensed professionals.
Step 3: Document the Damage
Accurate documentation is essential for a smooth claims process:
- Take clear, detailed photos or videos of all visible damage (interior and exterior).
- Make a list of damaged or destroyed items, including brand names, model numbers, and estimated purchase dates if possible.
- Keep damaged items (if safe to do so) until your claims adjuster has had a chance to inspect them.
Step 4: Contact Us
Reach out to First Western Insurance as soon as possible to report the damage:
- Call your First Western Insurance agent at 1-822-994-3934.
- Provide as much detail as possible, including date/time of the incident and a general description of the damage.
- Let us know the best way to reach you, especially if you’re in temporary housing.
- A claims adjuster will be assigned to your case and will contact you to schedule an inspection.
Step 5: Meet with the Claims Adjuster
Your assigned adjuster will assess the damage and help determine coverage:
- Be present during the inspection if possible, to point out all areas of concern.
- Share the documentation you collected, including photos, receipts, and your damage inventory list.
- Ask questions about next steps, timeline expectations, and coverage limits.
Step 6: Begin Repairs and Restoration
After your claim is approved, you can begin the repair process:
- Choose a reputable, licensed contractor. We recommend getting multiple estimates and checking reviews.
- Beware of storm-chasing contractors who pressure you into quick decisions.
- Stay in communication with your adjuster throughout the repair process to resolve any issues that arise.
Step 7: Review Your Policy and Plan for the Future
Once repairs are complete:
- Review your insurance coverage and consider updates or adjustments based on your experience.
- Create or update a home inventory with photos, receipts, and appraisals.
- Consider preventative upgrades like storm shutters, sump pumps, or reinforced roofing to minimize future damage.
